How Dance Therapy Works
What Exactly does a DMT do? 

   Dance therapy can take many forms and directions, depending upon whether you have concrete issues (such as behaviors that are causing pain, yet you find yourself repeating, or symptoms such as PTSD or  pain of unknown origin (headaches or back pain) or whether it is more about bringing to consciousness  feelings, thoughts and beliefs that you are not aware of and may want to change.

  What might Innerdance therapy be like for you?
  As your therapist I offer a therapeutic relationship where you are deeply understood, acknowledging your feelings on a body/mind level without judgment, and validating them.  Movement gives you a chance to concretize these feelings - move them out so you and I can see and work with feelings that have been buried.  I can also help you manage feelings that are particularly frightening because they feel overwhelming.  Together, you and I would create a relationship that encourages you to be in touch with your core being - your soul, or who you really are.  This is particularly done through creating a healthy relationship with your body.  Many different physical approaches can be used.  I would incorporate physically expressive movement of many kinds into our work: Authentic Movement, bioenergetics, yoga, psychodrama, continuum and energy work (EFT) and forms of direct touch from hands on healing.  It would depend on who I was working with and either their comfort zone, or the nature of their desire to expand their perceptions.

As a client moves, they often express themselves in terms of images, thoughts and emotions.  Verbal expression is encouraged as it arises during the direct bodily-felt experience of the mover.  A DMT can help someone interpret this material, or can use his or her training in interpersonal interaction to help a client find new heart connections and transform ego attachments - transforming a 'pain body' to a "pleasure body".

Individuals of all ages who have social, emotional, cognitive and/or physical problems can benefit from treatment using this modality, as well as those wishing to use dance/movement to contribute to their greater health and well being.  It is a pleasure for me to participate in this journey with others.
